5 Ways to Use Diet Pills Safely

1. Consult Your Doctor First

Before using any pills or starting any diet program, consult your doctor beforehand. Your doctor will give you a consultation and let you know whether you are a good candidate for diet pills and which ones would be the most effective. Be wary of taking any over the counter diet pills before consulting your doctor. Many over the counter pills may be harmful and may not have any actual weight loss benefits.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Diet pills often work like diuretics so you are going to have to drink enough water to replace the water your body is losing because of the weight loss pill. One of the easiest ways to get in your eight glasses is to drink a complete 8 oz. of water every time you take your diet pill.

3. Always Follow Instructions

Various diet pills come with different instructions for how you’re supposed to take them. Follow the instructions carefully. Not following instructions explicitly could cause you not to lose the weight you should, to seriously harm yourself or cause you to experience the more severe side effects associated with the diet pills. For example, you can’t consume more than 15 grams of fat per serving when taking pills like Alli or Xenical. If you eat more than that, a person may experience excessive gas and diarrhea, more frequent bowel movements or gas with an oily discharge.

4. Only Use for the Short Term

Diet pills aren’t for long-term use. With over the counter diet pills, you shouldn’t take them longer than three months. For prescriptions drugs your doctor will tell you how long you should be on the medications. Studies have shown that the drug most often used in weight loss medications, phenylpropanolamine, is safe to use for up to 16 weeks. While it is common for people to continue taking weight loss pills even after they should stop, there aren’t any studies that show the long term effects of indefinite diet pill use.

5. Keep a Balanced Diet

Diet pills aren’t a license to eat anything you want. They are diet aids not magic weight loss pills. Most diet pills require you to maintain a healthy, well balanced diet in conjunction with taking the pills. Some specify that your diet should be low calorie and low fat, if you want to lose as much weight as possible on the diet pills. Follow any dietary restrictions your pills have to the letter or you may not see the desired weight loss you’re expecting.
