Cures for Spider Veins

Spider veins occur when a valve in a vein becomes weak, preventing blood from flowing properly. Blood may then collect in the vein, enlarging as it pools and branching out like a spider web. Spider veins can usually be noticed on visible places of the body, like the legs and face, resulting in embarrassment and pain. Although spider veins may be concealed with makeup, there are many treatments that can be used to actually cure them.

Compression Stockings

According to the book, “Symptoms, Their Causes & Cures,” compression hose or stockings can help cure spider veins. Refrain from the use of regular panty hose as they can actually make spider veins worse. “Support that’s evenly distributed basically acts as a tourniquet, aggravating the vein,” explains Dr. Mitchel Goldman of the University of California. Instead, choose graduated compression stockings that make it hard for blood to pool in weak veins. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services explains that a procedure called sclerotherapy is commonly used to cure spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves a doctor injecting a solution directly into the spider vein, causing the walls to stick to each other and close, blocking the flow of blood into the vein. Spider veins should then revert to scar tissue and disappear after a few weeks. Sclerotherapy can be performed in a doctor’s office and does not usually require any anesthesia. Although most patients see a 50 to 90 percent improvement in the appearance of spider veins, some side effects may be noticed. Temporary irritation and stinging of the skin may occur. In addition, small blood vessels around the spider veins may appear. However, these usually disappear on their own.


A healthy diet can be an effective cure for spider veins. The book “Symptoms, Their Causes & Cures” explains that the more a person weighs, the more pressure is applied to the veins in the legs. In addition, low fiber and fatty foods themselves can also lead to spider veins. “A modern diet that’s generally low in fiber and high in fats, sugar and salt causes constipation and increases abdominal pressure. This forces more blood into the lower extremities,” explains Dr. Glenn Geelhoed of George Washington State University. Try to include high fiber foods like grains, vegetables and fruits into your diet. This can help you stay regular and may reduce pressure within the veins.
