Essential Oils & Their Purpose

Essential oils contain potent concentrations of healing and balancing compounds from flowers, leaves, seeds, trees and herbal plants. Essential oils have varying qualities and are used for relaxing, concentration, improving mood, decreasing stress and anxiety, boosting the immune system, cleansing the respiratory passages and for fighting infections. Essential oils also have disease-fighting properties that improve health by aromatherapy, by diffusion through the skin or in teas and foods.

Chamomile

Chamomile essential oil is pressed from the flowers of this plant. It is used in aromatherapy and as a tea for relaxing and decreasing stress to improve bouts of insomnia. It is added to body lotions to soothe itching skin in conditions, such as eczema caused by allergic skin reactions and for arthritis inflammation.

Peppermint

This essential oil is the most familiar of all plant oils and when used in aromatherapy it helps to improve memory, concentration and focus. As a tea or flavoring, peppermint cleanses the body and aids in digestion.

Lavender

Lavender oil is very effective to treat insomnia and restless sleep. When added to bath water it also helps to relax tense muscles and ease back pain. In cleansers and lotions, it is an antiseptic ingredient that gently cleanses acne prone skin.

Eucalyptus

This pungent essential oil has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties that clears respiratory passages and soothes sinus pain caused by colds and flus. Try it as a soothing steam inhalation and breathe in deeply to cleanse the lungs. It can also be added to laundry water to cleanse bedding and pillows of mites and fleas.

Mandarin

Mandarin oil is another very familiar aroma that is a great pick-me-up for low energy days. It improves, energy, memory and concentration and is an aromatherapy treatment to calm nerves frazzled by anxiety, stress and depression.

Juniper

This tree essential oil has strong infection-fighting properties that cleanse air of the bacteria, viruses and molds that cause illness. Add a few drops of essential oil to a spray bottle of water to cleanse surfaces and diffuse with an aromatherapy burner to remove airborne germs. Juniper is also used as an aromatherapy oil to increase energy and mental concentration.

Rose

This is one of the most popular fragrances for good reason. Rose essential oil has calming properties for both the mind and body to improve fatigue and stress. It also boosts mood and feelings of positivity and for this reason is often used in perfume formulas. Rose oil also has healing anti-inflammatory properties for soothing skin and even the body when added to foods and teas.
