How to get Rid of Oily Hair

Having oily hair can be incredibly annoying.  The roots become greasy after only a few hours, the ends look limp and dull and the hair generally looks as though it is not clean.

It is a problem for men and women all over the world and yet very few people know just how to deal with oily hair. This means that they believe they are helping their hair but all they are really dong is making the problem worse.

The first step towards getting rid of oily hair is making sure that you are washing it correctly. Many people wash their hair in water that is far too hot believing that this will help remove some of the excess oil when in fact the opposite is true. Washing the hair in hot water will strip the hair of all of its natural oils and so the scalps sebaceous (oil) glands will produce more to compensate for their loss.

The hair needs some oils to help protect the hair and lubricate the scalp. If it has none then the hair is more prone to damage. The water should be lukewarm.

Always use a shampoo and conditioner that have been specifically designed for people with oily hair. These contain ingredients that will wash and condition your hair and help prevent it from turning oily so quickly. Normal conditioners will weigh the hair down but specifically designed conditioners are lighter and will not make the hair limp.

Try not to wash your hair everyday. If you do then it will strip the hair of its natural oils which will make the problem worse. Try to limit yourself to washing your hair every other day. If you find that your roots do get greasy after a day then you can use dry shampoo to help absorb some of the excess oil. Sprinkle or spray some onto the roots and massage it in for a few minutes. Brush it out thoroughly.

Try not to touch your hair too much. It might sound obvious but so many of us touch or play with our hair without even realising it. Touching the hair will transfer the dirt from your hands to your hair.

Always wash your hands before you wash your hair. If you do not then you will also be transferring dirt from your hands to your hair which will result in hair that is not as clean as it could be.
