How to take Care of Damaged Hair

Healthy hair is easy to spot. It looks shiny and full of life. But unhealthy hair is even easier to spot because it looks dry, lifeless and dull. If you have damaged hair then you need to be very careful that you do not damage it further. This means that you may have to make some changes in how you take care of your hair.

The first thing you will need to do is take care when you are washing your hair. Wet hair is even more fragile than normal and so you need to be very gentle with it.

Always brush your hair before you wash it. This will make sure that any tangles are removed. This means that the conditioner will not have to work so hard to untangle the hair and it can concentrate on penetrating it more deeply, it also means that you will not need to scrub or pull at your hair to work it through the knots.

Use lukewarm water to wash your hair. Many people think that using hot water will make their hair cleaner when all it will do is strip it of its natural oils and damage it.

Thoroughly wet your hair with lukewarm water and apply a small amount of shampoo into the palms of your hands. Smooth it over your hair and then massage it into your scalp with  your fingertip. Be gentle and do not scrub at the hair or scalp because you will damage it.

Before you apply your conditioner you will need to remove the excess water from your hair. This will prevent the conditioner from being diluted by the water which will make it more effective. Do this by gently squeezing the water from your hair and then wrapping it in a towel for a few minutes.

Apply your conditioner by massaging it into the roots and working it through to the ends of your hair.

At least once a week you should try to use an intensive conditioning treatment. This will help to replenish and revitalise your hair.

Try to minimise the use of heated appliances on your hair. These will cause even more damage. If you must them then you should use an intensive heat protection serum to help minimise the damage they will cause. Even if you are only using a blow dryer then you should use heat protection.

Try to keep your hair away from the elements. Cover your hair in the summer to avoid damage from the suns UV rays. You should also cover it in winter to help prevent it drying out in the cold.
