How to Use Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is made from the cream-colored fat of cocoa beans, the same beans used to make chocolate. Due to its moisturizing and nourishing properties, as well as its pleasant chocolate scent, cocoa butter is added to lotions, creams, oils and cosmetics for a variety of purposes. Cocoa butter can be used at home for general body care or relief from certain conditions.

Step 1

Apply a lotion or moisturizing cream containing cocoa butter to your skin. Use it every morning, or whenever your skin feels dry. Cocoa butter is a natural moisturizer. Look for lotions that do not contain drying ingredients, such as alcohol, which can counter the benefits of the cocoa butter.

Step 2

Use a tanning oil that contains cocoa butter. Moisturized skin tans more efficiently than dry skin. Cocoa butter melts at body temperature, so it is quickly and easily absorbed into the skin. Be sure to also wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher if you are in the sun.

Step 3

Wear cosmetics, such as foundation, concealer and blush, that are made with cocoa butter. These makeup products are often creamier than other products, and the cocoa butter nourishes and moisturizes your skin throughout the day.

Step 4

Use cocoa butter lotion for massages. Massage your feet and legs with the lotion or ask someone to massage your back for you. The chocolate scent of cocoa butter is pleasing and relaxing, making it beneficial for aromatherapy.

Step 5

Apply cocoa butter cream to stretch marks. According to a 2010 study by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Hospital in Jamaica, patients using cocoa butter on stretch marks noticed an improvement that was slightly better than patients using a placebo cream. This may be because cocoa butter’s moisturizing properties improve the elasticity and appearance of skin.

Step 6

Rub cocoa butter cream onto your lips if they are chapped. The American Cancer Society also recommends applying cocoa butter to your lips if you have mouth sores. This will nourish your lips and protect sores from elements such as cold and dry air.

Step 7

Use cocoa butter lotion to protect areas of your skin that need protection. If you suffer from urinary leakage, you can apply cocoa butter to your skin to protect it from being irritated. If you have eczema or psoriasis, cocoa butter can protect your skin from harsh weather. The thickness and moisturizing properties of cocoa butter help to form a barrier between your skin and other elements.
