Preventing Dry Hair

Some people have naturally dry hair as a result of their genes, while others have dry hair from using shampoos and conditioners made with harsh chemicals. Whether you’re the former or you’re the latter, you want simple solutions that will make your hair healthy, shiny, and soft once again. What’s the answer to preventing dry hair? Moisturization and a healthy scalp. How do you get there? Try these tips:

1 T. virgin coconut oil
2 T. jojoba oil
1 T. castor oil
1 T. olive oil
1 T. tea tree oil
Combine all the oils together. The coconut oil, if it is truly “virgin,” will probably be hard or semi-hard at room temperature (below 70 degrees, of course). To melt it, just allow the bottle or jar to sit in a tub of hot water for a few minutes. Next, apply the oil mixture directly to the scalp. Massage gently using fingertips. You can heat up the oil a bit (not too hot, of course!) and use it as a hot oil treatment. You can also apply to the length of the hair. Let sit overnight, or at least one hour. Rinse thoroughly using the baking soda method below, or by using a gentle shampoo (with decyl glucose or decyl glucoside instead of sodium laurel sulfate, or sodium laureth sulfate). You can purchase the above oils at

This is perhaps the most important thing you can do in order to prevent dry hair. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin and hair hydrated, as well as to improve overall body health. You should have your eight glasses of water per day, but try not to exceed twelve!

1/2 c. mayonnaise
1 T. tea tree oil
1/2 avocado
1 t. lemon juice
Mix all the ingredients together until quite smooth. Then, apply to wet or damp hair. Massage through hair and scalp gently. Allow to sit for at least one hour, covered with plastic wrap. Rinse thoroughly. Great for locking in moisture!

1/2 – 1 c. baking soda
lukewarm water
1 t. lemon juice (optional)
Make a paste by mixing enough water with the baking soda. It shouldn’t be too thick or clumpy. Apply to scalp, massaging gently. Rinse thoroughly. Follow up with either the “Mayonnaise Praises” or the “Oil Treatment.”

bunch of chamomile
bunch of lavender
bunch of sage
catnip or burdock root if you can find them
Boil all of these together with enough water to cover. Allow the “tea” or the water to cool, until it is comfortable to the touch. Use it as rinse after taking a shower, or right after the “Mayonnaise Praises” or the “Oil Treatment.” Great for use everytime you wash your hair. Promotes healthy hair growth, gives hair sheen and shine, moisturizes, and it leaves the hair smelling nice!

Try these simple solutions for yourself, and prevent your hair from getting dry without using harsh chemicals!
