Things to Do in Maui in December

Overview

Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian islands and has always been a popular tourist destination with its year-round tropical climate, volcanic cones and sandy beaches. While many people might consider the island only a summer vacation destination, there are a number of activities, concerts, performances and celebrations that go on in the month of December, especially around the holiday season.

Christmas Tree Lightings

There are many Christmas tree lighting ceremonies held in Maui each December, including the historic Lahaina Banyan Tree, which is lit up each year with thousands of lights and also features events such as children’s craft workshops, a craft fair and a visit from Santa. The Ritz Carlton Kapalua Hotel also holds an annual tree lighting ceremony each December to celebrate the beginning of the season. The event features live music.

Stage Performances

Visitors to Maui in December can catch a variety of state performances at both the Iao Theater and at the King’s Cathedral. Features can include performances such as “A Christmas Story” and “Birthday of a King: The Musical.” These performances include seasonal features like Christmas carols, original music, special effects and even falling snow.

Special Concerts

The Seabury Hall Academy puts on a Christmas concert every year and also a holiday celebration featuring a variety of live music and Christmas carols. The Maui Choral Arts Association hosts a Christmas concert each December featuring performances by the Maui Concert Chorus, the youth chorus and the boys’ chorus. The Maui Pops Orchestra is another organization that holds an annual Christmas concert and several of the local churches also hold sing-along concerts and Christmas concerts throughout the month of December.

Maui Ocean Center

The Maui Ocean Center features a special program each December called “A Maui FISH-mas.” During this celebration the facility features a variety of children’s activities, holiday entertainment, craft vendors, special foods and even a visit from “Scuba-Claus.” During this time the aquarium also highlights animals with names unique to the season such as the Angelfish, the Snowflake Eel and the Candy Cane Shrimp. The event takes place during the entire month of December.

The Lahaina Cannery Mall

During the month of December the Lahaina Cannery Mall features free live entertainment leading up to Christmas Day with choirs performing Christmas carols at different hours throughout the day and also special Christmas hula dances and performances. Santa also makes appearances throughout the month.
